March 1, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Here we are at the end of yet another month.  Does it rush by for you as well as for us?  We’ll be seeing more wintry weather this coming month.  As it is, the temps were between -13 and -21 yesterday morning and it’s snowing once again.  March is known for coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.  (However, we’ve seen some major snowstorms in April, as well).

It’s been a winter of snow, rain, sleet, ice and not so many sunny days.  Hope it’s been a good winter for y’all, wherever you live.  Every place has it’s plus side and minus side.  We like New Hampshire.  Comparatively speaking, the weather certainly could be a lot worse.  The crocus’ will be popping up, the black flies will be buzzing around and we’ll see some hot, sunny days.  That’s all just around the corner.  I keep telling myself that !

We’ve been very busy around here and have been adding inventory to the site.  At any time, you can see what’s new by going to our website at www.scqs.com and clicking on Newest Additions.  There are always bits and pieces going up that are not always mentioned in the newsletter.

Pillowcase Marathon – Saturday, March 22 from 11 – 2:00.

We will be making pillowcases to donate to David’s House which is located in Lebanon , New Hampshire .

DAVID'S HOUSE offers a comfortable home-away-from-home for children receiving treatment through Children's Hospital at Dartmouth--CHaD--at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Children aren't medical patients or motel guests at David's House; they are part of their own family in a quality home-like atmosphere. When the child cannot leave the Medical Center , David's House is for the families of these children--a retreat where they can stay to find, and give, support to their child and to each other.

This is how David’s House came into existence.

DAVID'S HOUSE is named in memory of a remarkable little boy--David Cyr. He was just 22 months old and still in the process of being adopted by Dick and Gerry Cyr of Hartland , Vt. , when doctors discovered he had acute lymphocytic leukemia. That news only strengthened the Cyrs' resolve to adopt this special little boy and increase the love they already felt so deeply for him.

Cancer did little to stop David's love for life. He had a zest for living that touched all those around him.

Because of his frequent visits to the Medical Center , David became friends with other children undergoing treatment there. When he went home, David dreamed of taking these children with him to his house -- his haven from pain and suffering. During David's treatments, the Cyrs met parents of these children -- people who sometimes had to sleep in waiting rooms or in their cars because they couldn't afford a motel room. The Cyrs also began dreaming about creating a haven -- one where these families could stay. DAVID'S HOUSE is that dream.

When David died in 1984, the Cyrs dedicated their time to creating this haven.

DAVID'S HOUSE is a private, not-for-profit corporation. It keeps administrative costs to a minimum thanks to over 150 volunteers who give thousands of hours each year.

Many quilts are donated to David’s House each year from local and not so local Guilds and quilting groups as well as individuals.  The children who stay there are allowed to take home their quilt or a toy they especially like.  We all know how much children love their “special” pillowcases and thought it would be a great, comfort gift for them to take home when they leave.

If you are local and would like to participate in our project, please call or stop by to register.  We expect a good response and need to have room for everyone.  Some can cut, some can iron and some can sew.  There is, of course, no cost for this day and we have lots of ideas for the pillowcases.

For those of you who are our internet only customers, if this cause moves you to want to be involved, you may order any pillowcase kit on line and donate it to the project.  We can’t wait to see how many we can get done in just 3 hours and how long the warm feeling will last.

Well, it’s time to get to my never ending list.

Have a wonderful weekend, keep warm (or cool – whatever the case may be) and stop by if you’re ever in
New Hampshire .
